Wetlands restoration, a challenge

Through the Uganda National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), an effort to restore wetlands was rejuvenated in June -July 2024. However, the exercise was seen as controversial, unequal, and not well thought out as it involved demolishing structures especially houses around select wetlands such as Lubigi found nearby Kampala city by the various citizens.

As Mind-Nature Institute, we shared our opinion via our social medias, and other print media, applauding NEMA for choosing to restore wetlands. We, however, cautioned against a botched exercise that leaves women and children, and other vulnerable populations more vulnerable, and utmost, fails to be effective in the long run. We pledged our intellectual support to developing more effective strategies that achieve sustainable development.

Wetlands management and governance are still surrounded by various questions, to some we have work to do.
